Who Is a Good Candidate for Invisalign Aligners?

People everywhere are touting the benefits of using Invisalign® corrective trays to fix imperfections in the smile nature provided. When teeth are misaligned, one may be tempted to avoid smiling and may even be impeded socially because of self-consciousness. In the past, traditional metal braces were the only option to correct most of these problems, but today aligner trays provide an effective alternative.

What constitutes a potential candidate?

For those who are holding out hopes for using the Invisalign® process to help achieve a more attractive, and potentially life-changing smile, here are some criteria that may help explain which conditions are good candidates for corrective alignment trays.

Overbite

With an overbite, the upper teeth rest in front of the bottom teeth rather than meeting in the middle. This can cause the appearance of a shortened chin and speech impediments as well as jaw pain and difficulty in biting.

Overjet

This is in every way similar to the less-severe overbite, except in this condition, the upper jaw itself and not just the teeth protrude over the lower. This condition is not a good candidate for correction by Invisalign® trays but should instead be corrected with braces.

Underbite

An underbite is perhaps less common than an overbite but can also present problems with biting and chewing and may cause headaches or jaw pain.

Crossbite

When the top teeth overhang the bottom ones on one side and are inside the tooth line on the other, it is called a crossbite. This can cause chewing problems and pain, and uneven wear on the teeth. It may affect either the front or back teeth or both.

Gap teeth

A gap between the teeth, otherwise known at diastema, is more of a cosmetic issue than a harmful one, although it can cause speech issues such as whistling when pronouncing certain sounds.

Open bite

This type of problem is manifest by upper and lower front teeth that do not meet when the mouth is closed. It leaves an open appearance and makes biting more difficult and may cause drooling.

Crowded teeth

When the teeth are overcrowded due to a smaller jaw size or oversized teeth, or even due to crowding caused by wisdom teeth, it can cause the teeth to move out of alignment. This is the most common type of malocclusion seen in adults.

Baby and permanent teeth

Children waiting for final baby teeth to loosen and fall out may have a mix of both permanent and baby teeth. This can be caused by the lack of permanent tooth buds growing and moving into place, or slower maturity.

Generally straighter teeth

This problem is largely cosmetic in nature. There is no major misalignment problem but there may be a few teeth that are slightly crooked or out of alignment.

Conclusion

As described above, there are many different types of malocclusions that can cause insecurity for cosmetic reasons, difficulty chewing or biting or even pain. Only an examination by a dentist, including X-rays, can determine whether any given condition may be improved by the use of Invisalign®, but most people with the conditions listed above are considered good candidates.
