How Can You Treat a Toothache After Hours?

If you have a toothache when the dentist's office is closed, you might feel as though your world is coming to an end. Some toothaches are unbearable for the person to function when the pain is present. A toothache that pops up on a Friday evening, Saturday morning or holiday weekend has the potential to cause intense and lengthy pain as the dentist might not be available until some point at the start of the next work week. Our dentists have detailed some helpful ways to treat toothaches after hours. Follow these tips to minimize your tooth pain until the dentist is available.

Peppermint tea bags

Peppermint tea bags might seem like an odd solution for a toothache yet they have proven to work time and again. Apply peppermint tea bags to the tooth in question, and it will numb the pain, soothe the gums and provide some peace of mind. However, it is a mistake to apply a piping hot tea bag to your toothache. Let the tea bag cool before pressing it against the tooth in question. The tea bag should be slightly warm as opposed to hot. Alternatively, some patients have enjoyed success by placing a peppermint tea bag in the freezer for a few minutes and applying it to the tooth after it has chilled.

Apply a cold compress

If there is swelling around the painful tooth, press a cold compress against the exterior of your cheek for 20 minutes and then remove the cold compress for another 20 minutes. The cold temperature numbs the area of a toothache, providing considerable relief. The application of a cold compress will also combat inflammation and swelling. Give a cold compress a try, and it just might relax you to the point that you drift off into a restful sleep.

Garlic has the potential to alleviate your toothache

Humans have relied on garlic for medicinal purposes for thousands of years. Garlic has the potential to destroy nasty bacteria that spurs the formation of dental plaque. Garlic can also function as a pain reliever to boot. Crush a clove of garlic to make a paste. Apply the paste to the area in question. The addition of a small amount of salt might also reduce the pain. Some patients have also found patiently chewing a fresh garlic clove minimizes toothache pain.

Thyme has antioxidant properties as well as antibacterial properties that alleviate toothache pain. Add a couple of drops of thyme oil along with a couple of drops of water to a cotton ball. Apply the cotton ball to the site of pain, and it just might minimize or eliminate the pain.
