Am I a Candidate for All-On-4®?

The All-on-4® method is innovative, efficient and one of the best ways to replace missing teeth. However, not everyone is a candidate as each person has a different mouth and bone structure which may make treatment difficult.

People who are considering their tooth replacement options should explore the All-on-4 method but even then, it is up to an oral surgeon and dentist to determine whether or not that person is a candidate. In this article, we discuss some of the necessary criteria that make someone a candidate for the All-on-4 method.

Who is a candidate for the All-on-4 method?

First and foremost, it is important to understand what the All-on-4 actually is. The All-on-4 tooth replacement method involves the placement of four dental implants across one arch of teeth - either the top or bottom. Once the four dental implants are evenly placed beneath the gums, artificial teeth can then be attached to complete the treatment process. The artificial teeth tend to be dental bridges or dentures, depending on the patient’s choice and the dental professional’s recommendation.

The following are candidates for the All-on-4 method:

Missing all teeth

People that have all of their teeth missing are some of the best candidates for the All-on-4 method because this procedure is specifically geared towards replacing an entire arch of teeth. Oral surgeons and dentists don’t want to remove natural teeth if there are some still remaining. In some cases, teeth will be pulled if they are unhealthy, thus allowing for the All-on-4 to be performed.

Sufficient jawbone structure

Another criterion that makes someone a candidate for the All-on-4 tooth replacement procedure is for them to have sufficient jawbone structure. This is important because the four dental implants that are placed within the jaw must rely on some bone structure to support them. Without the necessary jawbone, the implants won’t fuse and may end up failing.

Because the artificial teeth will rely on the implants, the implants also must rely on something, which happens to be the jawbone. Without sufficient jawbone, the All-on-4 method may not be possible. However, dental bone grafts are an option to help make the procedure possible.

Healthy gums

Having healthy and strong gums is very important to have if one is hoping to be a candidate for the All-on-4 method. Without healthy gums, the open wounds that come from the implant incisions are more prone to bacterial buildup. This could cause infection, especially if the gums are already in bad shape.

It is also necessary for the gums to be strong because the implants are placed beneath the gums. If the gums aren’t strong then they may not be able to support the dental implants which could cause complications later on.
